  • Hardy Perennial Seeds: Soloman's seal seeds produce attractive white bell-shaped flowers followed by blue-black berries on arching stems ideal for shady gardens.

  • Low Maintenance Groundcover: Once established, these rhizomatous perennials form a spreading clump needing little care.

  • Blooms Spring to Summer: In spring, the Solomon's seal plant sends up stalks with pendulous, bell-shaped white flowers that bloom from May through July before developing into fruit.

  • Deer Resistant Foliage: The green throughout the growing season and are generally avoided by deer, making this an excellent choice for landscapes.

Solomon’s-seals are typically used as foliage plants (even though the flowers are nice, they are not particularly conspicuous), for their coarse texture and architectural presence. They combine well with ferns. It is best to allow fallen leaves from trees to remain where Solomon’s-seal grows as natural mulch and to form humus.

Hundredfold Note: True or False?

The last picture is a false Solomon's seal, which blooms on the tip of a branch. Both Solomon's seal and false Solomon's seal are Ontario native perennials. Both species share the name of an ancient King and the same habitat. They prefer shady and rich soils. Take a walk in an old-grown forest, you may find them growing side by side.

Solomon's seal or False Solomon's seal, there is no correct answer to this true or false question. Both are nice woodland under-story plants.
