Hazel is a small tree or shrub that is not as demanding as large nut trees. It requires less space and it is easier to prune. More importantly, the flavor of hazelnut is incomparable. This is a native shrub that bears noticeably smaller nuts than European hazelnuts.

Planting a hazel beside a vegetable plot is a good idea. Hazel is a renewable source of pea sticks within easy reach of green peas and climbing beans. Planting two genetically different plants improves cross-pollination for fruit.
