Hundredfold Note

According to university studies, the basswood is extremely hard to sprout from seeds. Yet, I determined to carry these tree seeds. Years ago, while walking on a Toronto street, the fragrance of some tree flowers attracted me, who was out of a job and did not know where to go. The aroma was so intense that I forgot all the troubles. I said to myself, I must know what this tree was. Later I realized it was the basswood.

While this memory is archived, another scene has it retrieved. It was autumn in a woodland, and while everything was dying back on the forest floor, this seedling stood proud and strong (see Picture 3), successfully out-competing the invasive European buck-thorn. Both memories remind me of hope, the most solid thing that sustains humanity.

Basswood seeds need a large space and a lot of practice to grow. If you can meet those stringent needs, give it a try. The reward would be immense.
